Still thinking about what to do on Ascension Day this year? Well, in case you are in Amsterdam (or planning to visit), here is a tip: the Hemeltjelief Festival returns at the NDSM in Amsterdam Noord on May 5th with a diverse and exciting line-up catering for all tastes and ages.
A colorful, cheerful and vibrant event, Hemeltjelief (an exclamation that literally translates as “My goodness!” or “Goodness me!”) is held every year on Ascension Day at the former NDSM Amsterdam ship wharf. Right along the IJ, the various stages traditionally host up-and-coming Dutch bands and Amsterdam DJs. In addition to the varied music programming, there are many interactive activities as well as art and theater acts taking place at various special spots around the old shipyard. Some of the bands featuring in the line-up of in this year’s edition include Umeme Afrorave, Shishani, and Amsterdam Faya Allstar. What is more, DJ Elfje and DJ Primaat will compete to send the crowd the best jungle boogie vibes, while mps PILOT will add another layer of exotic sounds bringing together an eclectic mix of drum’n’bass, flamenco, latin percussion, as well as Indian, tropical, and Balkan beats.
Advocating a sustainable policy and in support of good causes, this year Hemeltjelief! enters a partnership with Monkey Business, supporting organizations in Borneo and Sumatra that protect the orangutan and its natural habitat in the tropical rainforests. The festival’s new theme promises to transform the whole happening into a unique experience, so be prepared for some funky monkey tricks!
Next to its musical and theatrical line-up, the family-friendly festival offers plenty of special events and activities for children and the whole family. Also, festivalgoers under 12 years of age can get in for free. And for all those -adults- for whom such a packed programme is just not enough, they can go bananas at the after-party, which will be taking place at the Noorderlicht Café until 03:00 a.m. with sets by various DJs.
