Where do you come from and where do you live in the Netherlands?
My name is Sara Ghaedi and I come from beautiful Iran, a country rich in history and culture.I have recently moved to Utrecht after living in Amsterdam for almost 3 years. I’m excited to discover more about this wonderful city and enjoy all it has to offer!
What’s your job/business?
I am a software engineer at Labdigital, a dynamic digital agency located in Utrecht. At Labdigital, we specialize in creating innovative digital solutions for a wide range of clients. One of the most exciting aspects of working here is the diverse and international team. I’m thrilled to contribute to such a vibrant and inclusive workplace.
What was your first time in the Netherlands?
I moved to the Netherlands in March 2021, right in the midst of the pandemic. It was a challenging time, with the country under strict curfews and lockdown measures. When I first arrived, I had to quarantine at home for 10 days before I could explore or interact with others. The restrictions meant that I spent those initial days in isolation, adjusting to my new surroundings from the confines of my apartment. I have to admit, it wasn’t the most fun start!
What is the nicest thing about the Netherlands?
People! Even though my initial opinion about Dutch people was shaped by some negative stereotypes I encountered online – such as the belief that they are rude, overly direct, and that forming friendships with them might be difficult – I found my actual experience to be completely different. Upon meeting Dutch people in real life, I discovered that they are incredibly kind, friendly and welcoming. Far from the harsh impressions I had read about, they turned out to be warm, humorous and genuinely hospitable. At least the people I’ve interacted with have made me feel comfortable and embraced!
What’s the worst thing about the Netherlands?
I would like to mention everyone’s problem: the weather! Before moving to the Netherlands, I never imagined the weather would become an issue for me, but after spending one winter here, I understood why everybody complains about it. The short, cold, rainy days are not the best for me, but at least they make me appreciate the summer even more!
Do you have Dutch friends?
Yes, I do! Even though my friends are mainly Iranians and internationals, I also have lovely Dutch friends!
What do you like about Dutch people? What don’t you like?
What I really like about Dutch people is that they have a great approach to work – they work to live, not live to work. They really value having a good balance between their job and personal life. This means they make sure to enjoy their free time, whether it’s with family, friends or hobbies. Work is important, but it doesn’t take over their lives. This balance helps them lead happier and less stressful lives.
Do you have a favourite restaurant in your city?
Sarban is my current favourite restaurant in Utrecht. It’s an Afghan restaurant located on Oudegracht. They serve the best food, and the Middle Eastern decor is the cutest; it reminds me of my grandma’s house!
Where do you prefer to relax in your city?
My home! I’m not a big fan of busy places, so when it comes to relaxing, I definitely prefer to stay at home, cook something for myself, and enjoy some me time!
What’s your favourite Dutch store?
Dille & Kamille is my favourite store. I love everything they sell, and I can’t leave without buying something for my kitchen.
What do you like to do in the weekend?
I always spend time with my friends on the weekends. We live in different cities, so weekends are the perfect time to see each other and catch up.
Who is your favourite Dutch person?
Van Gogh is undoubtedly my favourite. I love his artwork and his life story. I was happiest when I visited the Van Gogh museum.
What would you recommend a visitor to do and see in your city in the Netherlands?
Exploring the old parts of the city centre is always a delightful experience. The historic streets and canals offer a charming atmosphere and a glimpse into the city’s rich past. However, I also highly recommend visiting Castle De Haar – it’s an absolute must-see. The castle itself is breathtaking, with its grand architecture and rich history, but the gardens are equally spectacular. Walking through the beautifully landscaped grounds is a peaceful and enchanting experience that shouldn’t be missed!
What is your favourite Dutch food? And what Dutch food do you dislike?
I’m a food lover and always eager to try dishes from different cultures. My favourite Dutch snack has to be bitterballen; they’re delicious. I even enjoy herring! However, there’s one Dutch treat I just can’t get used to, and that’s drop – those black licorice candies. They have a very unique taste that simply isn’t for me!
Do you celebrate Dutch holidays? What is your favourite?
Yes, I do celebrate some Dutch holidays. One of my favourites is King’s Day. I love the vibrant atmosphere, the orange decorations everywhere, and the lively street markets. It’s a day full of fun and national pride, and it’s great to see people coming together to celebrate.
Where do you like to go out?
I like going to Amsterdamse Bos because it’s a perfect spot for spending time outdoors. I love having picnics there, enjoying the fresh air and the green surroundings. It’s also a great place for riding a boat on the lake and exploring the nature trails. Whether I’m relaxing or taking a leisurely walk through the woods, it’s always a refreshing and enjoyable experience.
What famous Dutch place do you recommend visitors to really go and see?
I would say Zaanse Schans. It’s a fantastic place to visit if you want to experience traditional Dutch culture. The open-air museum features historic windmills, wooden houses and workshops where you can see traditional crafts like cheese-making and clog production. I’ve been there twice and wouldn’t hesitate to go again if the chance arises.
Best-kept secret in your city?
There’s a small Italian grocery store and restaurant called Mamma Mia Trattoria in Utrecht Leidsche Rijn, and they serve the best pizzas ever. After enjoying a delicious pizza, having a scoop of their ice cream makes for a perfect evening.
