Pretty Dark is a cinematic photo series about the mental well-being of young people growing up in a world where social pressure and performance are important themes. This photo series by Annabel Oosteweeghel (1969) cinematically shows the mental well-being of ten young people aged 15 to 25. Seeing photos and videos of perfect people who only do nice things results in pressure on young people to create a perfect online personality. This can lead to a constant search for validation. The picturesque photos are carefully staged. They are quiet moments in which the people portrayed adopt an identity based on their own unique story. Oosteweeghel wants to show young people in their strength: ‘There is light at the end of the tunnel.’
