Wanrooij Gallery in Amsterdam is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by the German fine art photographer Christian Voigt from 25 October 2024 until 25 January 2025. The gallery presents a stunning selection of his new LUNAR series. Iconic spacesuits and technical marvels from the USA and Russia are portrayed in a previously unseen way of poetic quality. The fascinating, large-format photographs show the objects against a black background, as if they were situated in the absolute silence of space, conveying both the loneliness and the immense vastness of the cosmos.
In addition to photographic artworks of prehistoric dinosaur skeletons, Christian Voigt also enjoys international acclaim for his monumental, hyper-realistic landscape and architectural photography, especially interiors of museums and libraries. The adventures of astronauts, venturing into the unknown and exploring the limits of the human horizon, form the starting point for the LUNAR series.
From the bulky spacesuits of the early years to the sleek and high-tech suits of the present, the images reflect the progressing evolution of spaceflight technology. With great attention to detail and precision, Voigt captures the subtleties and sophisticated elements of this attire. The images underscore how science and technology strive to provide astronauts with ever-advancing and safer equipment for their journeys into space, protecting the human body outside the Earth.
By depicting the suits and technologies individually and isolating them from any tangible surroundings, Voigt emphasizes their individual character. By reducing the elements to a minimalist environment, he visualizes the unknown and underlines the daring and pioneering spirit of humans. The photographs deepen our understanding that behind the impressive suits and technical achievements, there are still men with the courage to explore the dark depths of the universe.
Christian Voigt (Munich, 1961) studied in Berlin and Vancouver, and then worked in film and publishing. As a passionate photographer, he developed a unique visual language and technique that early on attracted the interest of art institutions, critics, and collectors. His autonomous work has been exhibited in Amsterdam, Basel, Dubai, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Miami, Milan, New York, Paris, and Saint-Tropez. The artist lives and works in Hamburg and the South of France.
The exhibition marks the 20-year anniversary of Wanrooij Gallery, founded in 2005 by Martijn Wanrooij and his partner Anja Koster.
