The crossing tower, the spire tower in the middle of the roof of the Nieuwe Kerk, will be restored in 2025. A large platform will be built on the roof of this Amsterdam monument for the restoration. This offers a unique opportunity in the context of the jubilee year 750 years of Amsterdam. For seven months, the public will have the opportunity to climb to the roof of the church for an unforgettable view of Dam Square and the capital, a view usually closed to the public. The last major maintenance of the crossing tower took place in the 1960s. At that time, the church remained closed to the public for almost twenty years during the restoration. In 2025, the Nieuwe Kerk will give the public the opportunity to watch the work on the roof.
To the top in 216 steps
The route to the roof of the fifteenth-century church, almost 40 meters high, promises a unique experience in 216 steps. It starts with access to the 17th-century staircase that was originally built for a 115-metre-high church tower, on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, which was never completed; this ascent is normally not accessible to the public. The route then continues via a (temporary) scaffolding staircase to the platform on the roof. Once at the top, the tower can be viewed from up close, while the city skyline unfolds. The roof offers great views of the Westerkerk, Koepelkerk, Oude Kerk, Zuiderkerkstoren, the Central Station, the Bijenkorf, the Kalverstraat and of course the Royal Palace, but also modern city icons such as the Zuidas, A’DAM Toren, Pontsteiger and the Rembrandttoren. Visitors will descend on the Dam side, where a second temporary scaffold will be built.
Ticket sales for ‘Het dak van de stad – the roof of Amsterdam’ will start on Saturday 1 March. The platform will open to the public on Friday 21 March and will be open daily from 11 am to 6 pm. Employees of De Nieuwe Kerk will be present at all times to provide guidance and assistance.
