Your circle of friends is just a social event away

Moving to a new country is an adventure, but it can also feel isolating at times. When I first moved to the Netherlands, I quickly realized that making connections was crucial not just for practical reasons but also for feeling at home. With this article I’d like to give you some tips but also practical info which could make your life in the Netherlands.

For me, it worked by joining a local book club. Discussing novels over coffee with people from all walks of life opened the door to a network of friends, advice, and even opportunities. Whatever your passion – painting, sports or tech – there’s a community in the Netherlands waiting to welcome you.

If you’re looking to expand your network this year, January is the perfect time to start. From professional events to social meetups, the Netherlands offers plenty of ways to connect with others, whether they’re fellow expats or locals.

Why networking is essential for expats
Networking as an expat goes beyond finding a job (though that’s a great perk!). It’s about creating a sense of belonging in your new home. Making connections can help you in many ways, starting from getting emotional and practical support, to discovering the Dutch culture, feeling less as a tourist and, finally, opening professional opportunities.

Whether you’re new to the Netherlands or have been here for years, it’s never too late to grow your circle.

Top networking opportunities in the Netherlands

1. Expat-focused meetups and groups

The Netherlands is home to a vibrant expat community, and there are countless events tailored specifically for internationals. Platforms like Meetup and Internations regularly host gatherings where you can mingle with people from around the globe. Popular events include Friday Night Drinks for Expats in Amsterdam and international food nights in Utrecht.

Facebook groups are another great resource. Look for groups like Expats in the Netherlands or city-specific communities, such as Rotterdam (or any other city) Expats or Haarlem International Friends.

In almost every city there is a group of Girl Gone International with subcategories for individual cities. Joining a club centred around your interests can be one of the most natural ways to connect with others. Dutch sports clubs (football, cycling or even rowing) welcome participants of all levels. Prefer something more relaxed? Many cities have English-speaking book clubs; some, like the Expat Bookclub Dordrecht, are not specifically for women or only expats. On the contrary, they are really open to everyone (these are two reasons why I chose the one in Dordrecht).

But there are also painting classes or photography groups. On Eventbrite you can find so many events, of any kind, around your area. A good example are the Sip ‘n paint ones, which are really funny: you can use your creativity and it is a perfect opportunity to meet new people you already have something in common with.

2. Professional networking events

For those looking to expand their careers, the Netherlands offers a range of professional networking opportunities. Organizations like the Dutch American Chamber of Commerce and Women in Tech Netherlands host regular events and workshops.

If you work remotely or run your own business, coworking spaces like WeWork, Spaces, The Social Hub and Buzz Business often organize networking events for freelancers and entrepreneurs.

3. Volunteer opportunities

Volunteering is a fantastic way to make meaningful connections while giving back to your new community. Look for organizations like Serve the City. To find volunteer work near you, you can contact the volunteer centre, if you know one already, or your municipality to find one near you. Opportunities range from helping at food banks to teaching English or supporting local cultural events.

Practical tips for networking success

I know, approaching new people can be scary, especially if you are an introvert. The bad news is that you need to do that, and be proactive. The good news is that more people than you think are in the same boat as you, looking to expand or create their circle of friends.

If you want to get more in touch with locals, join groups that are not only exclusively for expats, but also start to learn the local language and understand the culture. With Going Expat I organise events regarding culture and communication; join if you are interested.

Take the first step

Take that first step, whether it’s joining a local club, attending a networking event, or simply striking up a conversation at your favourite café. You never know – it might lead to a lifelong friendship or your next big opportunity.

So, what are you waiting for? Make 2025 the year you expand your horizons and embrace everything the Netherlands has to offer!
